Did you know that May is 'National Heritage Month'?
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is calling on both private and public institutions in the country to launch heritage-related activities this May in celebration of "National Heritage Month".

"The NCCA enjoins all cultural agencies, national government agencies, schools, Philippine embassies and consulates, public libraries, and private institutions to participate in the national event by encouraging them to initiate their own heritage-related activities for the month of May," the agency said in a statement.
According to the NCCA, celebrating Heritage Month helps create among the Filipino people a "consciousness, respect, and love for the legacies of the nation's cultural history".
The celebration of National Heritage Month started in 2003 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 439.

This year, the national event will be anchored on the theme "Victory and Humanity: Upholding Filipino Heritage and Identity" in solidarity with the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan last April 27, as well as the 500th anniversary of the Philippines' part in the first circumnavigation of the world.
"The theme underscores the need to strengthen public awareness and explore initiatives on advocating for the conservation and promotion of Philippine cultural heritage and the Filipino identity in this time of crisis," the NCCA explained.
It is also a call to educate the people--particularly the youth--and foster their awareness of both tangible and intangible heritage through different trainings, forums, immersion, and other related events, the agency said.
Moreover, this year's celebration aims to recognize the value of Philippine cultural heritage and to promote solidarity among Filipinos during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
Speaking of the COVID scourge and the dangers that it brings, the NCCA enjoined the public to explore the use of various virtual platforms to help in the promotion of activities for the 2021 National Heritage Month.
