DepEd 'happy' with early registration outcome, extends campaign until May

Despite the ongoing health situation in the country brought by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) is pleased with the initial outcome of its Early Registration activity for School Year (SY) 2021-2022.

“We are very happy with the outcome of our early registration,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones said on Thursday, May 6. “It surpasses our expectations when it comes to the number of learners and parents willing to start or continue their studies,” she added.

Latest data from DepEd showed that around 4.3 million learners in Kindergarten, Grade 1, 7, and 11 were able to register for the upcoming school year before the official early registration period ended on April 30. The activity started on March 26.

With over four million learners already signed up for the next school year, DepEd decided to extend the campaign until the end of this month.

“Amidst the current situation, this only shows how important education is to our stakeholders,” Briones said - noting that parents can still register their children until the end of May 2021.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Planning, and Human Resource and Organizational Development Jesus Mateo explained that the DepEd has decided to extend the early registration period to give parents and guardians more time to participate.

"We will continue to accept early registrants until the end of May to give you more time to register,” Mateo said.

Mateo explained that the initial results of the campaign is a welcome development to DepEd in light of the current health situation in the country.

“Achieving 92 percent within the period compared to last year, for us, is already a great achievement,” Mateo said. “This is despite the challenges like restrictions and internet connection issues of parents,” he added.

During the Early Registration campaign the whole month of April, the DepEd tallied 933,073 kindergarten, 1,502,900 Grade 1, 1,069,856 Grade 7, and 809,217 Grade 11 learners for a total of 4,315,046.

The CALABARZON recorded the highest number of registered learners at 437,561, followed by Central Visayas with 395,830, and Western Visayas with 365,361 based on Early Registration Monitoring Report as of May 6.

To ensure the safety of learners, parents, and personnel, DepEd is conducting its Early Registration by utilizing communication platforms like Facebook chats, text messaging, and drop-boxes in schools or barangays.
