Ateneo, India university sign deal to strengthen disaster studies, research
The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and Indian-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Mumbai signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen academic and research work in disaster studies.

The two institutions signed the MOU on Tuesday, May 4, in a virtual ceremony.
Under the agreement, ADMU and TISS will promote exchange of students, faculty members, and researchers; placement of students within the university or with industry partners for internship; exchange of information and academic resources of mutual interest; and activities such as collaborative research, joint symposia, and guest lectures.
"The linkage focuses on disaster studies, an emerging filed that merges science, engineering, and the social science in studying and analyzing disaster prevention, management, and mitigation," ADMU said.
The university noted that the field of disaster studies is "one of the most important interdisciplinary areas of study and research" as the world grapples with disasters and climate crisis.
TISS is among the first institutions in Asia to offer a full-fledged Masters in Disaster Studies in 2007.
Meanwhile, ADMU has several academic and social development programs focusing on disaster risk reduction and management. Its Disaster Response and Management (DReAM) team has been at the forefront of emergency response in the country.
ADMU's primary partners will be the School of Science and Engineering and Social Science of the Loyola Schools and the Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Studies for TISS.
