Acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines growing -– Mayor Olivarez

There is a growing acceptance among Parañaque City residents of the different vaccine brands against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) compared to the previous months, Mayor Edwin Olivarez said.

"Noon pong kami ay nag-introduce nito noong buwan ng January, may mga hesitation po sila (When we first introduced the idea of vaccination in January, there was a lot of hesitation)," Olivarez said.

"Pero noong nag-launch po tayo ng ating Sinovac at saka iyong AstraZeneca po noong March, gumanda po iyong kumpiyansa ng mga tao dito at nakita po nila iyong ating mga health professional ang una pong nagkaroon ng vaccine (But when we launched the Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines in March, there was a positive response among the people especially when they saw health professionals getting inoculated)," he added.

Olivarez said that a total of 35,000 individuals have been vaccinated since the city government started its vaccination program in March. He added that almost 100 percent of health workers have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

In the A2 category which includes senior citizens, the city has vaccinated almost 15,000 while in the A3 category, which is composed of persons with comorbidities, 10,000 individuals have been vaccinated.

Olivarez said the city aims to inoculate 5,400 residents in June once a steady supply of COVID-19 vaccines becomes available to reach about 150,000 a month.

He added that in the span of six months, the city should be able to inoculate 900,000, including the second dose The city needs to vaccinate 70 percent of its 725,000 residents which is equivalent to half a million people to achieve herd immunity.
