PH hotel industry player identifies keys to survival from COVID crisis

Budget hotel booking platform RedDoorz Philippines has emphasized the need to follow safety measures and take advantage of available technology, saying these actions will help keep the hotel industry afloat amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

During a recent online roundtable discussion dubbed "Streamlining Hotel Operations: The Industry’s Speed Up Solution to Battle COVID-19," RedDoorz Country Manager for the Philippines Miguel Capistrano III said they have been following health and safety protocols set by the government to keep their hotel doors open.

Capistrano said the hotel brand has also refocused on assisting their partner hotels in securing accreditations as well as implementing a set of robust cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation protocols through the HygienePass Certification Programme.

"The acquisition of 130-plus DOT (Department of Tourism) accreditations and 150-plus HygienePass certified hotels paved the way for us to keep a stable demand," Capistrano said.

"It provided us up to 40 percent average range of occupancy rate and allowed the firm to safely serve more than 176,000 Filipinos around the Philippines," he added.

With the importance of digitalization in the hotel’s daily operations, RedDoorz also fronted its extensive technology systems as a vital operational tool to optimize pricing and drive up revenue and occupancy based on demand.

Apart from anchoring on risk-free tavels, Capistrano added that they are also working with different stakeholders in the hotel industry while at the same time developing strategies to help enhance their revenue amid the pandemic.

To give an idea of its clientele in the new normal, the RedDoorz official shared that they've recently catered to people undergoing isolation and quarantine, as well as production teams of "teleseryes" (television dramas).

"We are looking at these channels that need hotels for their teleserye for a month where everybody had to be in a bubble, things like those. We have to be creative so that's always part of our strategy," Capistrano said.

Capistrano also reiterated the importance of working hand-in-hand with different industry stakeholders to speed up the sector's recovery from the current health crisis.

"RedDoorz hopes to play a key role in the industry for boosting Filipinos' confidence to travel domestically due to the presence of the accredited, safe, and tech-enabled hotels across the country," he added.
