SHINee's Taemin enlists in the military

K-pop boy band SHINee’s youngest member, Taemin, started his military service on May 31, becoming the last member of the group to enlist.

Taemin, 27, wanted to enlist quietly so SM Entertainment did not announce the time and place of his enlistment.

He released the album “Advice” last May 18 and said, "I hope this album will provide some comfort to the fans during my hiatus."

During SHINee’s recent 13th Debut Anniversary Online Party on Naver V Live, the members and SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man gave messages for Taemin on his enlistment.

“We worked together for more than 10 years. I feel awkward and sad that we will be separated for a while,” said Onew.

Key said, “Time flies so fast so don't worry. Stay healthy and I look forward to the day you come back. I always root for you.”

“I can't believe that the Taemin I saw when he was in sixth grade is joining the military. Hope you stay safe and healthy. I'm always on your side,” said Minho.

Lee Soo-man told him, “Taemin, you did a great job until now. You worked hard for the team. Now you are enlisting in the military. Korean men must serve in the military. You become a real man. But while you are gone, Onew, Key and Minho will work hard and protect the name of SHINee.” All Korean men must enlist in the military by age 28.

Taemin will undergo basic military training, serve as an active duty soldier and join the Korean Army’s military band. SM Entertainment said Taemin applied to join the military band and was accepted. Only those eligible for active duty soldiers are accepted in the military band.

Onew enlisted in December 2018 and was discharged in July 2020. Key started his military service in March 2019 and completed it in October 2020 while Minho enlisted in April 2019 and was discharged in November 2020.

Taemin debuted in SHINee in 2008. He will be discharged from the military on Nov. 30, 2022.
