TD 'Dante' slightly intensifies, accelerates over PH sea

Tropical depression "Dante" has slightly intensified while cruising the Philippine Sea east of Mindanao mid-Sunday, May 30, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Dante's location was estimated at 820 kilometers (km) east of Mindanao at around 10 a.m., PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin.

It has slightly intensified with maximum sustained winds near the center of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

PAGASA said Dante is moving west faster at 25 kph.

Based on the latest forecast track, tropical depression Dante will be at 665 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur by 8 p.m., May 30.

By Monday, May 31, Dante will be at 535 km east of Hinatuan at around 8 a.m., and 515 km east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte at around 8 p.m.

PAGASA said the outer rainbands of Dante may bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Caraga and Davao Region in the next 24 hours.

"Under these conditions, isolated to scattered flooding (including flash floods) and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps," PAGASA said.

"Adjacent or nearby areas may also experience flooding in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels," it added.

Dante, the country's fourth tropical cyclone in 2021 and second for May, will likely intensify into a tropical storm by Monday, May 31.
