Metro Manila records 41°C-45°C heat index

Three monitoring stations in Metro Manila registered heat index values between 41 degrees Celsius (°C) and 45°C on Sunday, May 30.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (PAGASA) monitoring showed that the highest heat index in Metro Manila on Sunday was 45°C at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City, followed by 43°C at the Science Garden monitoring station in Quezon City, and 41°C in Port Area, Manila.

NAIA, Pasay City, along with Sangley Point, Cavite, and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, has the second highest computed heat index values in the country on Sunday.

PAGASA said that heat index between 41℃ and 54℃ is considered "dangerous" levels due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Aparri, Cagayan recorded the highest heat index on Sunday at 46°C.

The top 16 stations that reached "dangerous" heat index levels on Sunday were:

Iba, Zambales (43°C, 11 a.m.)

Masbate City, Masbate (43°C, 12 p.m.)

Science Garden, Quezon City (43°C, 3 p.m.)

Clark Airport, Pampanga (42°C, 11 a.m.)

Dagupan City, Pangasinan (42°C, 11 a.m.)

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (42°C, 2 p.m.)

San Jose, Occidental Mindoro (42°C, 2 p.m.)

Port Area, Manila (41°C, 11 a.m.)

Puerto Princesa City, Palawan (41°C, 11 a.m.)

Sinait, Ilocos Sur (41°C, 2 p.m.)

Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (41°C, 1 p.m.)

The highest heat index so far in 2021 was recorded in Dagupan City, Pangasinan on May 14 at 53℃.

In the next 24 hours, PAGASA said Mindanao and Central and Eastern Visayas will be cloudy with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to tropical depression "Dante."

The public is warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will continue to be partly cloudy with isolated afternoon or evening rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA reminded the public to remain vigilant against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.
