DepEd allocates 674 teaching positions for DOST scholar-graduates, says DOST chief

For this year, the Department of Education (DepEd) has allocated more than 670 teaching positions for the scholar-graduates of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña welcomed the DepEd’s allocation of teaching positions for DOST scholar-graduates for School Year 2021-2022.

"For FY (Fiscal Year) 2021, a total of 674 teaching positions have been allocated by the Department of Education (DepEd) for the DOST scholar-graduates. These scholars are set to start their service by August or before the opening of classes,” he announced on the DOSTv Facebook page on Friday, May 28.

The DOST chief said as of October 28, 2020, the DepEd has created 3,319 Special Science Teacher I (SST I) positions to cater the graduates of the Junior Level Science Scholarship under RA No. 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013”.

"This covers the SY (School Year) 2016-2017 until SY 2020-2021,” he said.

RA No. 10612 supports the implementation of the K-12 law by developing a pool of scholar-graduates who can competently teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the secondary education, particularly in senior high school and ideally in their respective home regions, de la Peña said.

The law mandates the DEpEd to ensure the job placement of the scholars as SST I, he noted.

"The appointment of these scholars shall be on provisional status, under the condition that they must pass the LET within the first five years if they opt to continue teaching in DepEd after fulfilling their service obligation,” de la Peña said.

"The endorsement of scholars shall come from the DOST-SEI based on the actual number of graduates as of the end of the academic year.”
