PH welcomes UN Security Council's support for ASEAN's 'constructive' role in Myanmar

The Philippines on Monday welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s “strong support for the positive and constructive role” played by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in facilitating a peaceful solution to end the violence in Myanmar.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) echoed the Security Council's call for the "release of all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint".

Last Friday, the Security Council was briefed by Brunei Darussalam Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof as Chair of ASEAN, concerning the outcome of the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting on Myanmar.

The UN Security Council members welcomed the convening of the ASEAN Leaders' Meeting on April 24, 2021 in Jakarta, as well as the Chairman's Statement and the "Five-Point Consensus."

The members of the Council underlined their full support for the work of Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General in Myanmar, and welcomed her ongoing visit to the region. They cited her work as being complementary to the efforts of ASEAN and hoped she would visit Myanmar as soon as possible.

During the Council meeting, Burgener presented a report on her meeting with Myanmar junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing held on the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting in the Indonesian capital.

The Philippines also expressed its support for the work of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy who is currently touring the Southeast Asian region and hopefully Myanmar.

The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar comprise the 10 ASEAN members.
