Eta Aquarid meteor shower reaches peak on May 6-7 -- PAGASA

Filipino skywatchers can catch sight of shooting stars at their peak between May 6, Thursday, and May 7, Friday, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its astronomical diary for May, PAGASA explained that the Eta Aquarid meteor shower is usually active between April 19 and May 28 every year.

"The shower occurs each year as a result of the Earth’s passing close to the orbit of Halley’s comet twice a year," it added.

PAGASA noted that the radiant of the meteor shower will virtually lie on the celestial equator and is more favorable to Southern Hemisphere viewers.

In the Northern Hemisphere, about 20 or more meteors per hour can be seen from May 6 to May 7.

PAGASA advised the public that the meteor shower is best observed just a few hours before dawn.

This month is also the best time to view groups of stars, the agency said.

"After sunset, the grouping of stars known as the Big Dipper is well placed high in the northeastern sky," PAGASA said.

"The North Star Polaris can easily be located under normal weather conditions by using the reference or the pointing stars namely Dubhe and Merak. By using their distance, an imaginary line can be drawn downward passing to these two stars and counting five times," it added.
