Holy smokes! PNP burns P13.4-M marijuana in Kalinga

The Philippine National Police (PNP) raided four clandestine marijuana farms in Kalinga province and ended up destroying P13,464,000 worth of the grown cannabis plants on Friday, May 28.

PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said the plantation was found in Barangay Loccong in Tinglayan town by intelligence operatives of the Cordillera police regional office (PRO-COR) and Kalinga provincial police office (PPO). It has a total land area of 6,900 square meters.

He said the police received a tip about the presence of the plantation, hence, an operation was immediately hatched.

Police Brig. Gen. Ronald Lee, PRO-COR regional director, said clearing operations were conducted by joint elements of the PRO-COR and Kalinga PPO around 10 a.m. which led to the discovery of the marijuana. They subsequently burned the plants.

"We are aware that some parts of Cordillera are naturally-conducive environment for marijuana plants to grow that is why we are warning those who engage in this prohibited trade that we will intensify our police operations to thwart your illegal activities," Eleazar said.

Due to the naturally cold weather in the Cordillera region, some unscrupulous individuals find it as a haven for growing marijuana, which is illegal.

A large portion of Kalinga province's lowlands are also open grassland and mountains, making it hard for the police to monitor marijuana growers.

But the Cordillera police have started adapting technological innovations; earlier this week, they announced that they are now using drones to spot marijuana plantations.

"We know how resourceful these marijuana growers have been but the PNP and PDEA are relentless in our pursuit...of drug/crime-free country," Eleazar said.

It was not mentioned if the police identified the culprits behind the maintenance of the four marijuana farms.
