The country logged 7,443 additional coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases on Saturday, May 29, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

The number of active cases or those still undergoing treatment stood at 53,614---- with 93.1 percent experiencing mild symptoms, 2.3 percent were asymptomatic, 1.8 percent with severe symptoms, 1.4 percent in critical condition, and 1.28 percent in moderate condition.

Meanwhile, 7,533 more patients have recovered, raising the recovery tally to 1,142,246. The death count also increased to 20,722 after 156 more people lost their lives because of the viral illness.

The Philippines’ running tally of confirmed cases is at 1,216,582, the DOH said.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the increase in cases may be attributed to the high number of cases being detected outside National Capital Region (NCR)-plus areas.

On Friday, May 29, the DOH announced 8,748 cases, the first time that the country reached the 8,000-mark since May 2.

“Ito po siguro ay bunsod noong mga pagtaas ng mga kaso sa iba’t-ibang lugar aside from the NCR Plus. Pero minu-monitor po natin maigi at oobserbahan ho natin iyan para makapagbigay po tayo ng accurate na information sa ating mga kababayan (This is probably due to the increase in cases in different areas aside from the NCR Plus. But we are monitoring these closely so that we can provide accurate information to our citizens),” said Vergeire on Saturday during a public press briefing.

The DOH recently said they have observed a rise in cases in the regions of Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Soccsksargen, and Davao region.
