25-year-old Catholic school in Bulacan shuts doors due to COVID-19 pandemic

Citing the challenges brought by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, an old Catholic school in Bulacan announced its permanent closure after the School Year 2020-2021.

In a statement on May 25, St. Joseph College of Bulacan (SJCB) said COVID-19 has "adversely affected" the school's enrollment.

" ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has greatly reduced, if not resulted to loss in family income, mandated mobility restrictions, the need to comply with the IATF protocol on social distancing requirements, and the new demand of distance learning and all these factors, adversely affected the enrollment," the College said.

In the last six years, the school also found it difficult to attract new students.

"Within the said period, the enrollment of the College kept on dwindling as education from private school has been challenged by government policies of K-12 and the free tuition in state colleges and universities, local universities and colleges, and state-run technical and vocational institutions," it added.

SJCB also bared that it could not keep up with the increase in public school teachers' salaries that it found it hard to attract teachers and professors to teach.

However, it vowed to assist its stakeholders and students with their transfer to other schools and colleges.

Last November, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines said at least 10 Catholic schools nationwide have temporarily ceased operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of them is the 107-year-old College of the Holy Spirit Manila which will permanently close in 2022.
