Josie Gabuco failed in her bid to advance in the gold medal match after she sustained a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Uzbekistan’s Gulasal Sultonalieva in the semifinal round of the ASBC Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships Thursday night, May 27, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The 34-year-old Gabuco, a former world champion, was the top seeded fighter in women’s 48-kilogram light flyweight category. Even with the setback, she still earned a bronze medal for making it to the semifinals.
A five-time gold medal winner in the Southeast Asian Games, Gabuco joined other Filipino boxers that were eliminated in the weeklong meet, which include Maricel dela Torre in women’s lightweight (60kg), Marvin Tabamo in flyweight (52kg), Jere Samuel dela Cruz in lightweight (60kg) and John Paul Panuayan in light welterweight (64kg).
“Sayang yung laban ni Josie,” said national team coach Roel Velasco in a message exchange with Manila Bulletin.
There are three remaining boxers left to carry the fight for the national team, including Tokyo Olympics-bound boxer Eumir Marcial, who claimed a semifinal spot in the middleweight class (75kg) after his quarterfinal foe Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdene of Mongolia withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
The other two are light flyweight (49kg) Mark Lester Durens and bantamweight (56kg) Junmilardo Ogayre.
“May tatlo pa tayo na sasabak sa semifinals, lahat naman sila may chance maka-pasok sa final round,” said Velasco, as the semis matches will start at 6 p.m. Friday in Dubai (10 p.m. in Manila).
Marcial will face in the semis Jafarov Saidjamshid of Uzbekistan, while the other pairing will be second seed Seyedshahin Mousavi of Iran versus Abilkhan Amankul of Kazakhstan.
Durens, who won in the quarterfinal with a first round RSC (Referee Stops Contest) against Mansour Khalefah of Kuwait, will meet Daniyal Sabit of Kazakhstan after he scored a 5-0 triumph on Kornelis Kwangu Langu of Indonesia.
The other semis pairing is Uzbekistan’s Mirzakhmedov Nodirjon versus Mongolia’s Orkhontungalag Unubold, who stunned top seed Mirlan Turkbai Uulu of Kyrgyzstan with a 3-2 win.
On the other hand, Ogayre moved to the semis with an impressive 5-0 win against Rukmal Prasanna of Sri Lanka in the quarters. He is up against top seed Mirazizbek Mirzahalilov of Uzbekistan, a 4-1 winner against Indonesia’s Mohammad Hussam Uddin.
Also in the semis are Kyrgyzstan’s Esenbek Akylbek and second seed Nharkhuu Enkh-Amar of Mongolia.
