Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto III is seeking a P500 increase in the current monthly social pension of indigent senior citizens.

Sotto on Thursday, May 27, filed Senate Bill No. 2243, to amend the Senior Citizens Act (Republic Act No. 7432) and provide an additional financial assistance to indigent senior citizens for their daily subsistence and medical needs.
"The rising cost of living and the added financial burden brought about by the pandemic has taken a toll on our indigent senior citizens," Sotto explained in the bill released to media Friday, May 28.
From the current P500 monthly social pension, the bill proposes a stipend of P1,000, and shall not be less than that.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in consultation with the Department of Budget and Management and other stakeholders, shall also be mandated to review the amount every two years and adjust, if necessary, according to the current consumer prices and relevant economic indicators.
Once passed into law, the distribution of the stipend shall also be transferred from the DSWD to the National Commission of Senior Citizens within three years.
"This will aid our indigent senior citizens defray the cost of daily subsistence and other medical needs," Sotto said of his proposal.
