Metro Manila cop dies of COVID-19; PNP death toll rises to 65
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has logged its 65th fatality from the dreaded coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with the death of a police officer assigned in Metro Manila, Gen. Guillermo Eleazar revealed Friday, May 28.

PNP Chief Eleazar said the fatality was a 41-year-old male cop. He did not divulge the identity and the exact place of assignment of the deceased police officer.
However, Eleazar said the patient tested positive for COVID-19 on May 6 and was immediately admitted to a quarantine facility for treatment.
On May 14, the patient's condition worsened to the point that he had to be brought to the hospital due to cough and difficulty in breathing. Six days later or on May 20, the patient was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and intubated.
On May 27, the attending doctor declared the patient dead.
"Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. As frontliners in fighting this unseen enemy, some of our police officers are putting their life on line," Eleazar said.
"Saludo po ako sa inyo (I salute you)," he added.
Meanwhile, the PNP Health Service recorded 200 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, which brought the total cases in the police organization to 23,571.
The number of active cases reached 1,740, while the total of recoveries stood at 21,766.
