It took 17 years before all six cast members of the iconic television show “Friends” to reunite for a
television/streaming special.
Amid the calls of the show’s loyal fans, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc took to the stage during the COVID-19 pandemic to reminisce their most memorable moments from the show and bring joy to fans all over the world.
If you’ve missed it, here’s the lowdown on the iconic “Friends: The Reunion”
That Ross and Rachel chemistry was real. Nobody even mentioned it before but “Friends” stars Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer almost became an item during the early seasons of the show. The pair revealed that they were crushing on each other during the first seasons but never found the perfect timing because they were always in relationships with other people at the time. Courtney Cox said she was glad they did not date in real life because they were able to use the tension to bring to life Ross and Rachel’s iconic love story on screen.
David Schwimmer was the first person who was cast on the show. Even before auditions began for the cast of Friends, series creators Kevin Bright and Marta Kauffman said that they wrote the part of Ross with David’s voice in mind. They met the actor a year before and his hangdog expression never left them. They had to woo him away from theater with a gift basket and a promise of a good experience on the show and the actor eventually signed on.
Matt LeBlanc threw his shoulder in The One Where No One is Ready. After three good takes on the episode where Chandler and Joey fight over a couch, production decided to do another take where Joey dives for the couch. A bad landing dislodged his shoulder from its socket and he had to go to the hospital to have it reset. Writers had to work around the injury by incorporating a sling into the next episodes.
Lisa Kudrow and Lady Gaga jam on to “Smelly Cat.” What’s a “Friends” reunion without the return of “Smelly Cat”? Phoebe performed her iconic song with the addition of a surprise guest, Lady Gaga and a gospel choir. The singer also thanked Lisa Kudrow for representing people who are “different” and celebrating that difference.
Monica and Chandler were supposed to be a one-off. The series creators originally intended for Monica and Chandler to have a one-night stand and use it as a running joke. However, when fans responded in such a big way to the revelation, writers decided to explore the storyline which ended up as one of the most successful arcs of the show.
Bright Kauffman Crane. Finally, fans got to meet the three geniuses that put together the show. Apart from providing a glimpse into the creative process, Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane gave fresh insights into the characters and what made each of them so special.
