No sweat as Marcial claims semis spot in ASBC

Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial booked a spot in the semifinal round and has assured himself of a bronze medal in the ASBC Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships Wednesday night, May 26 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The Tokyo Olympics-bound Marcial moved to the semifinal round after his opponent Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdene of Mongolia withdrew from the event due to a shoulder injury.

“Marcial was supposed to fight last night (Wednesday),” said Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippine secretary-general Ed Picson in a message exchange with Manila Bulletin.

“But his Mongolian opponent withdrew due to shoulder injury. Kahapon pa duda ng team na hindi makakalaban (Mongolian) kasi nakita nila sa mess hall hindi magalaw ang braso.”

Byamba-Erdene arranged a quarterfinal match against Marcial – top seed in the middleweight (75kg) category – following a 4-1 triumph versus Iraq’s Ridha Talib Jabbar in the preliminaries.

Marcial will face in the next round either No.4 Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu of Kazakhstan or Jafarov Saidjamshid of Uzbekistan as the two clash in the quarterfinal stage of the weeklong meet.

The semifinal bout of Marcial, who earned a bye in the preliminary stage, is set Friday night at 6 p.m. (10 p.m. in Manila).

Three other Filipino boxers are in the semifinal round, Mark Lester Durens, Junmilardo Ogayre and Josie Gabuco.

In last Tuesday’s quarterfinals, Durens downed Mansour Khalefah of Kuwait with a RSC or Referee Stops Contest) in the first round of their light flyweight (46kg) bout, while Ogayre came through with an impressive 5-0 win against Rukmal Prasanna of Sri Lanka in the bantamweight category (56kg).

Durens will face Daniyal Sabit of Kazakhstan after the latter scored a 5-0 win opposite Kornelis Kwangu Langu of Indonesia, while Ogayre will take on top seed Mirazizbek Mirzahalilov of Uzbekistan, a 4-1 winner against Indonesia’s Mohammad Hussam Uddin.

Gabuco was the first to book a semifinal spot as she got a bye in the quarters. She will face Thursday night Uzbekistan’s Gulasal Sultonalieva, a 5-0 winner opposite Rasmika Ilangarathha of Sri Lanka.
