We have given up everything and followed you

REFLECTIONS TODAY In today’s Gospel, Peter declares that they, the disciples, have given up everything and followed Jesus. One’s capacity to give up everything to become a disciple is in itself a gift from God. How is it possible for someone to give up the former way of life for the sake of the Gospel if not through God’s grace itself? Nonetheless, Jesus gives the assurance that the disciples will be rewarded a hundred times more. But isn’t it that being a disciple of Jesus is already the best reward one might have? Being a disciple demands the giving up of everything that is not of God so that we can be with God. When we are with God, we have everything. Do we recognize our discipleship as already a reward in itself? Do we get closer and closer to God each day? As Jesus’ disciples, are we ready to give up things that are not of God? GOSPEL • MARK 10:28-31 Peter began to say to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. 31But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first.” SOURCE: “365 Days with the Lord 2021,” ST.
