K-pop superstars and Grammy nominee BTS added another record for their new digital single “Butter.”

Music streaming app Spotify announced that “Butter” rewrote Spotify history by achieving the highest streams in a single day last May 21, the date the song was released.

“On May 21, #BTS_Butter broke the record for most-streamed song in a day in Spotify history #SpotifyCharts,” Spotify Charts posted on Twitter but did not disclose the numbers.

Korean media reported on May 23, based on a press statement by Big Hit Music, that according to Spotify, “Butter” earned 20.9 million global streams on the first day of release on May 21, which is the biggest number of global streams per day in Spotify’s history. This is 66 percent higher than the 12.6 million global streams record set by BTS’ “Dynamite” last year.

On the Spotify Charts website on May 21, “Butter” debuted at No. 2 on the Top 200 Global chart with 11,042,335 streams, compared to Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,” which took first place with 12,192,526 streams.

“Butter garnered 8,858,814 global streams on May 22 and 7,878,899 on May 23 for a three-day total of 27,780,048 global streams.

However, BTS ARMYs are demanding answers from Spotify on the total streams garnered by “Butter.”

“@Spotify we would like you to address the issues being raised explicitly. It’s not just any other day. Butter literally broke the record for the highest debut on Spotify Charts. We demand answers. #InvestigateSpotify,” BTS ARMYs replied to Spotify’s Twitter post.
Another wrote, “Hello Spotify, we'd like to know why 47% streams of Butter were filtered when we used the same playlist as Butter Instrumental which only got 25% of streams filtered @Spotify @SpotifyCares.”

Earlier, BTS’ “Butter” music video set two new records on YouTube by achieving the biggest music video Premiere with viewers of over 3.9 million peak concurrent and most viewed music video in the first 24 hours of release with 108.2 million views.

At the 2021 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) on May 23 (May 24 in the Philippines), BTS won in all the four categories that they were nominated in: Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Social Artist (Fan Voted) and Top Selling Song for “Dynamite.”
