New LPA spotted; ITCZ to bring scattered rain showers over Mindanao

A low pressure area (LPA), embedded inside the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), was spotted east of Mindanao on Tuesday afternoon, May 25.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) estimated the location of the LPA at 885 kilometers east of Mindanao or still outside the country's area of responsibility at around 3 p.m.

Weather specialist Grace Castañeda said the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.

The LPA has no direct effect yet over the country but the ITCZ is expected to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Mindanao.

PAGASA warned the public against possible flash floods or landslides during moderate to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, and Visayas will continue to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies due to the easterlies but have a higher chance of isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

Based on the monitoring of the PAGASA, several parts of the country continued to record "dangerous" heat index values on Tuesday due to the prevalence of the warm easterly winds.

The top 13 stations with the highest computed heat index values on Tuesday are the following:

Dagupan City (48°C, 2 p.m.)

Sangley Point, Cavite (45°C, 11 a.m.)

Ambulong, Batangas (44°C, 2 p.m.)

Aparri, Cagayan (44°C, 2 p.m.)

Clark Airport, Pampanga (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (43°C, 11 a.m.)

Casiguran, Aurora (42°C, 11 a.m.)

Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City (42°C, 3 p.m.)

Cubi Pt., Subic Bay, Olongapo City (41°C, 2 p.m.)

El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental (41°C, 2 p.m.)

Science Garden, Quezon City (41°C, 2 p.m.)

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (41°C, 2 p.m.)

Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur (41°C, 11 a.m.)

A heat index above 40℃ is considered "dangerous" due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

So far, the highest heat index in 2021 was registered in Dagupan City, Pangasinan at 53℃ on May 14.
