Displaced OFWs in Jeddah still stranded after one month

The situation of several displaced overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Jeddah continues to worsen amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In a report from GMA News, it has been a month since around 100 OFWs who lost their jobs in Saudi Arabia first sought help from the Philippine government.

Rene Florendo Marasigan, one of the displaced workers, said the situation had worsened a month since they first sought help as they still had no income and are still stranded in Saudi Arabia. Most of them are still staying in a housing facility provided by their manning agency.

He added that all of them "really want to go home."

Marasigan said they still have not received an answer from their agency and the government as to when they will be able to go home.

"Up to now po, wala pa po silang sinasabi na malinaw. Puro sinasabi lang po nila, puro follow up lang," he told GMA news.

Marasigan, meanwhile, said they now only rely on non-government organizations that are helping them.

“There are volunteers who give food, rice, and canned goods,” he said.

The Overseas Welfare Workers Administration (OWWA) had earlier said it would send food to the OFWs in the housing facility and that it was preparing the return flight for the OFWs.
