Davao Oriental Governor, wife test positive for COVID-19

DAVAO CITY - Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang and his wife, Nanette Dayanghirang, tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, May 25, Governor Dayanghirang confirmed that he and his wife tested positive for the virus. He said they received the results on Monday, May 24.

"Gikasubo nako nga ipahibalo kaninyo nga nagpositive ko ug ang akong kapikas sa COVID-19. Nadawat nako ang result niadtong May 24, human mi magpa swab test niadtong May 23 sa dihang nibati mi ug mild nga kalintura sugod niadtong

May 19 (I am sorry to inform you that I and my wife tested positive for COVID-19. I received the results last May 24 after undergoing a swab test last May 23, after we started experiencing mild fever starting on May 19)," Dayanghirang said. He said both of them immediately self-isolated.

Dayanghirang said they still have a mild fever and experience mild symptoms of the virus. He said they are under close monitoring for treatment, contact tracing, and testing.

"Pero ayaw mo kabalaka, kay okay lang ko ug si Nanette, duna lang mga ginagmay nga kalintura (But do not worry. Nanette and I are okay, we only have mild fever)," he said

The governor also called on those who were in close contact with him last week to undergo self-quarantine and to follow health protocols while awaiting instructions.

"Isip usa ka front liner, makaingon ta nga normal lang kini apan mao kini ang realidad nga giatubang sa akong pamilya sa pagka-karon (As front liners, we can say that this is just normal, but this is the reality that our family is facing right now)," he added.

As of 5:00 pm on Monday, the Department of Health (DOH) Davao Center for Health Development reported 78 new cases of COVID-19 in the region bringing the total number of active cases to 1,943. The DOH also recorded 12 deaths and 137 recoveries bringing the total number of fatalities and recoveries in the region to 23,135 and 1,066, respectively.

Davao Oriental has recorded a total of 1,553 COVID-19 cases with 61 active cases remaining. The province has also recorded 1,454 recoveries and 38 fatalities.
