CHED urged to assist 'struggling students,' plan for gradual resumption of classes

Instead of pushing for flexible learning, a student group has urged the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to instead provide assistance to "struggling students" and formulate plans in preparation for the gradual resumption of classes.

In a statement, National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) National President Jandeil Roperos maintained that CHED "should be at the forefront of asserting the gradual and safe resumption of classes."

"This is what we have expressed from the start: even if flexible learning is a mix-and-match of online and offline measures, the tendency is to resort to online means because of the limitations of modules and other printed materials as well as the need to consult professors or classmates through online platforms," Roperos said.

"The complaints of students, faculty, staff, and families on the current set-up of learning is not a result of external influences but from their own lived experiences of the grave shortcomings of flexible learning," she added.

Roperos noted that the tireless calls for academic ease, academic break, financial assistance, and junking of fee hikes are a manifestation of "the worsened gaps in education."

CHED's defense of flexible learning is evidence of their massive distance on the trials and encounters of students and teachers, according to Roperos.

"What we need now is a data-driven approach, immediate assistance to struggling students, inclusive consultations and plans for stakeholders, most importantly, the proactive advancement of the welfare of the education sector especially in preparing for the gradual resumption of classes," she added.

"Saying that the 'students and teachers are adjusting' to flexible learning is a big cover-up and denial of the failures of the current education mode. CHED should fulfill its mandate of promoting quality higher education and ensuring access to it. We strongly urge CHED to heed the calls of students and express utmost concern for our welfare."

CHED Chairman Prospero De Vera III said during a webinar last week "flexible learning will be the norm" and there is no going back to the traditional, full-packed face-to-face classrooms.

However, on Monday, May 24, De Vera clarified that the conduct of full face-to-face classes remains a possibility depending on the public health situation in the country.
