PEZA promises to help businesses rise again amid health crisis

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has launched its "Balikatan Sagip Negosyo Program" in efforts to bring registered business enterprises on the pathway to recovery amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

PEZA Director General Charito Plaza revealed the agency's project during her dialogue with locator companies of the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ) in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu last week.

"These are just ways for us to pay back our PEZA locators for giving jobs to their constituents, contributing to the social progress of the area with low poverty and crime incidence," Plaza said.

According to her, sales of goods by a PEZA enterprise to other PEZA enterprises may be considered indirect export even if the goods are not directly related to the registered activity of the PEZA enterprise-buyer, provided that the transaction is between two PEZA-registered enterprises.

Plaza added that the board is mulling an extension of the allowance for work-from-home arrangements, particularly for information technology (IT) companies. She said this would depend on the government’s decision on whether or not to keep the country under a state of calamity.

Plaza also announced that PEZA and ecozone workers in Lapu-Lapu City--through the Cebu City local government unit (LGUs)--would all get a free COVID-19 shots since they are listed under the A4 priority group. The particular group covers economic frontliners.

Meanwhile, Plaza said she aims to hold similar dialogues with other LGU-hosts of economic zones nationwide so she may hear their concerns and reciprocate the investors' contributions to the local economy. #
