#NoStudentLeftBehind trends online as stakeholders reject 'normalization' of flexible learning

The hashtag #NoStudentLeftBehind continues to take social media by storm after the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) pronounced that Flexible Learning will be the “norm” at the tertiary level.

On Twitter, #NoStudentLeftBehind currently has 12.7K tweets on Monday, May 24. The #LigtasNaBalikEskwela also became trending over the weekend following CHED’s stand on educating the youth in the new normal.

Many users rejected CHED’s policy wherein Flexible Learning will be the “new norm” in the coming school years.

Twitter user with handle @Iamdeviance, for instance, said: “Online class is draining, modular class is nerve- wrecking, and motivation to pursue is fading.”

@MarsIndahauz, on the other hand, noted that students continued their studies “despite all the mental breakdowns it caused us, for we did hope that virtual learnings are just temporary and f2f will be back soon, for more than a year we suffered and now you just decide and cut all our hopes?”

There are also those who pointed out that remote learning is not working as students are not learning in the alternative learning platforms. “You keep telling that this blending learning is effective, but we all know it is not. We are just doing this for compliance and we don't want to be left behind. The government must strive to go back to normal and not to implement and stick to a new normal,” said @fritzarvhiee.

For @akiresarap, attending online classes “robbed too much energy. Physically and mentally draining, pursuing a course in flexible learning throughout is something we should not normalize.”

Tweets expressing opposition and rejection to Flexible Learning as the new norm at the higher education level continue to pile up.

During a webinar entitled “Educating our Children in the New Normal” on May 21, CHED Chairman Popoy De Vera said that Flexible Learning will be the norm as “there is no going back to the traditional, full-packed face-to-face classrooms.”
