'Don't be buzzer beaters': Poll official calls on potential voters to register early

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has urged the public to immediately register and not wait for the last minute especially amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

"It's important to register early. The problem before was its already crowded at the end," Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a radio interview on May 22.

"In the Philippines, we have a tendency to be buzzer beaters. So we expect that many will come near the end once again," he added.

Jimenez expressed hope that more individuals will heed their call with satellite voter registration activities already allowed.

"Registration can already be done outside local Comelec offices. Many will hopefully get registered because it is more convenient for the people," he said.

"The schedules of satellite voter registration activities are already posted at the Comelec Facebook page," Jimenez added.

Voter registration, including satellite registration, and the issuance of voter's certification resumed in all Offices of the Election Officer (OEOS) in the National Capital Region and nearby provinces of Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna and Cavite (NCR Plus) and other provinces and cities which were placed under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) on May 17.

The Comelec said applications may be filed at the OEO from Mondays to Fridays, or in satellite registration sites on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Voter registration period for the May 2022 national and local polls will run until Sept. 30, 2021.
