5.6-magnitude quake strikes near Davao Occidental, no damage expected -- Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) detected a magnitude 5.6 earthquake off the coast of Davao Occidental on Sunday morning, May 23.

Phivolcs said the quake occurred around 10:02 a.m. and traced its epicenter at 258 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

The quake, initially measured at 5.5-magnitude, was located at a depth of 128 kilometers.

It was felt as a "slight shaking" at Intensity II in General Santos City.

Phivolcs' instruments also recorded the earthquake as a "scarcely perceptible" one at Intensity I in Kiamba, Sarangani.

The quake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault in the area.

Phivolcs does not expect damage to property due to this earthquake but aftershocks are likely to occur.
