K-pop superstars BTS released their new English song “Butter” on May 21 and they are setting their sights on winning a Grammy Award.
They earned their first Grammy nomination at the 63rd Grammy Awards held on March 14. They were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their hit song “Dynamite,” becoming the first K-pop act to be nominated for a Grammy.
BTS held a global press conference Friday at the Olympic Hall in Seoul about “Butter,” a dance pop track and the K-pop idol group’s second English song after “Dynamite,” which was released on Aug. 21 last year.
When asked about their goals for “Butter,” Suga and RM said they hope BTS will win a Grammy Award.
"It's hard to say we don't have thoughts about it. Our goal on getting a Grammy is still valid, and we will try once again with 'Butter.' We are waiting for a good result,” said Suga.
RM explained, "I know that many people are wondering about this and it's correct that we are thinking about it. We'll try our best," according to Yonhap News.
The Recording Academy announced that the 64th Grammy Awards will be held on Jan. 31 next year at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The eligibility period for the 64th Grammy Awards is from Sept. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021 and the final-round voting will be held from Dec. 6 to Jan. 5.
There is no date yet for the announcement of nominations. For the 63rd Grammy Awards, the nominations were announced on Nov. 24 last year.
The Recording Academy announced on April 30 that there will be changes in the Grammy rules. This after The Weeknd slammed the Grammys after he failed to get any nomination last year.
It said it will eliminate the Nominations Review Committees, composed of 15-30 “highly skilled music peers who represented and voted within their genre communities for the final selection of nominees.” Instead, the Grammy nominees will now be determined by voting members of the Recording Academy.
“With this change, the results of Grammy nominations and winners are placed back in the hands of the entire voting membership body, giving further validation to the peer-recognized process,” the Academy stated.
In addition, the Recording Academy announced that “to ensure music creators are voting in the categories in which they are most knowledgeable and qualified, the number of specific genre field categories in which Grammy Award Voters may vote has been reduced from 15 to 10.”
“Additionally, those 10 categories must be within no more than three fields. All voters are permitted to vote in the four General Field categories (Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist),” it said, aimed at preventing bloc voting.
The Recording Academy also added two new categories to bring the total number of Grammy Award categories to 86. The new categories are Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Música Urbana Album (Latin Music Field).
In addition to the Grammy Award, Suga said they are also aiming to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart again.
Last September, BTS made history when “Dynamite” debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first South Korean artist to achieve it.
