Tolentino lauds inclusion of Olympics, SEA Games athletes in vaccine priority list

Senator Francis Tolentino lauded on Friday, May 21, the government's pandemic task force for approving the vaccination of athletes set to join the Tokyo Olympics and the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

"I thank the IATF (Interagency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Disease) for heeding the call to prioritize our athletes -- now its time for the athletes to carry the flag proudly, go for gold and inspire the nation," Tolentino said in a text message sent to reporters.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the IATF has allowed the bubble-type training of athletes bound the Tokyo Olympics and SEA Games, subject to guidelines and health protocols.

Roque also said that the athletes and their coaches, as well as other delegates and officials will be prioritized in the vaccination.

The Philippine Olympic Committee earlier said that the SEA Games Federation will implement a strict vaccination policy. Those who are not vaccinated will not be allowed to participate the biennial sports event.

Organizers of the Tokyo Olympics, on the other hand, said athletes would not need a vaccine to participate, although they are strongly encouraged to get the COVID-19 jabs.
