ITCZ to bring scattered rain showers, thunderstorms over VisMin, parts of Luzon

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will continue to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over a huge part of the country in the next 24 hours.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) weather specialist Raymond Ordinario on Friday, May 21, said the ITCZ will bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao.

ITCZ is a region where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, which is characterized by frequent and often severe thunderstorms.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Ordinario said the easterlies or the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean will still bring hot and humid weather conditions across the rest of the country.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms may affect Metro Manila and the rest of the country by weekend.

Based on the monitoring of PAGASA on Friday, the top 10 stations with high heat index values were:

Dagupan City (49 degrees Celsius, 2 p.m.)

Sangley Point, Cavite (48°C, 2 p.m.)

Ambulong, Batangas (47°C, 2 p.m.)

Clark Airport, Pampanga (45°C, 2 p.m.)

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pasay City (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (43°C, 2 p.m.)

Aparri, Cagayan (42°C, 11 a.m.)

Central Luzon State University, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija (41°C, 2 p.m.)

Davao City, Davao del Sur (41°C, 3 p.m.)

Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte (41°C, 2 p.m.)

A heat index above 40℃ is considered "dangerous" due to the high likelihood of heat cramps and heat exhaustion.

So far, the highest heat index in 2021 was registered in Dagupan City, Pangasinan at 53℃ on May 14.

As of Friday, Ordinario said there is a slim chance that a tropical cyclone may form or enter the country's area of responsibility by weekend.
