'Green' warriors: PCG plants at least 500 mangroves in Negros Occidental conservation site

At least 500 mangrove propagules have been planted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to ensure the sustainability of a mangrove conservation site in Negros Occidental.

"The mangrove planting activity and coastal clean-up drive served as avenues to raise awareness on the importance of marine environmental protection in protecting lives and properties, especially during natural calamities," the PCG said in a statement on Thursday, May 20.

Through the initiative of PCG Auxiliary 1305th Squadron and Fisherfolk Association of Villa Miranda, the propagules were planted at the mangrove conservation site situated in Barangay VI – A Villa Miranda, Victorias City, Negros Occidental last Tuesday, May 18.

The PCG personnel also collected two large sacks of non-biodegradable waste materials.

According to the environmental organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the planting of mangroves helps prevent coastal damage from hurricanes and typhoons.
