DAR team survives 'perilous' boat ride on way to distribute land titles in Camarines Sur

Facing rough seas, Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) officials led by Secretary Brother John Castriciones braved a boat ride to the remote Island of Lahuy in Caramoan, Camarines Sur just to distribute land titles to local agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Castriciones said in a statement Friday, May 21 that he and 14 other members of a DAR contingent had to endure a "perilous" three-hour sea voyage to the island to finally hand over the to 124 farmer-beneficiaries their certificates of land ownership awards (CLOAs).

The distributed land titles cover 331.45 hectares (ha) of agricultural lands spread all over the island.

Castriciones said he chose to conduct personal distribution of the CLOAs “to ensure that the land titles delivered to each of them will not fall in the wrong hands".

The secretary narrated that their boat was met with surging waves while transiting to and from the island due to inclement weather.

"The boat master needed to repeatedly slow down and let the boat coast along each time surging waves as high as two meters roared on its path," he said.

The DAR team again experienced another difficulty when the smaller speed boat carrying the secretary and other officials collided with a big rock while wading through the shallow part of the sea. Nobody was hurt from the mishap.

The distribution on the island took place from May 18 to 19.
