Medium Rare  Jullie Y. Daza Vaccination hesitancy. Choosy vaccinees. Will the supply be enough? Will the vaccines expire before they can be put to use? Will herd immunity take years? Questions. Problems. With trepidation, lest my message be laughed out of his phone, I asked Edson Guido, ABS-CBN’s chief of data analytics: Don’t you think the vaccination drive will go faster with more efficiency if we stopped “prioritizing” groups A1 to A5? His answer was Yes! (This is the first time I’m on the same page as a math wizard.)  Edson replied that indeed, vaccinations will be more “free flowing” without grouping people into categories. “There seems to be hesitancy among,” of all people, “the priority groups. If opened to everyone, those who want to get vaccinated will be able to do so, including those who work and those at risk.” A priority lane can be designated for A1 to A3. As I see it, the service is uneven and the sites are often helter-skelter, higgledy-piggledy with lots of people in one center and only a few lonely souls in another. Two months since the rollout, said Edson, “we need to adjust based on the reality on the ground.” Why keep away people who are able, willing, and ready to take their shots today, now? The Pfizer factor may be a burp at the moment, with the brand-conscious flocking to centers offering the US-made drug, but once the novelty wears off, the queuing and crowding will become more manageable. In a paper for Columbia University, Edson wrote: “Only with a calibrated relaxation of restrictions and a targeted vaccination strategy will the Philippines be poised to revive its consumption-driven economy . . . and emerge from one of the world’s longest lockdowns.” With 40 percent of cases in Metro Manila plus Central Luzon and Calabarzon accounting for 60 percent of the economic output, “the key to herd immunity is to inoculate people in Metro Manila and nearby, with priority for frontliners.” Putting more money into people’s pockets is important. In addition, 74 million of the population used the Internet while 80 percent shopped online  during the lockdown. “Boosting the digital economy will greatly benefit MSM enterprises as the backbone of business, 99 percent, with the biggest share of employment, 60 percent plus.”
