Robredo speaks on being a judge if she weren't VP

Vice President and opposition leader Leni Robredo will most probably be a judge by now if she did not become a politician.

During a recent interview on Teleradyo’s Kapamilya Konek, the country’s second top official said that her appointment letter as a judge has already been signed when she decided to run as congressman of the third district of Camarines Sur and defeated the influential Villafuerte clan in 2013.

“Most probably, baka judge na ako ngayon (I am a judge now). I was a practicing lawyer for a very long time but when my husband died, I applied sa (to the) Judiciary and pipirmahan na iyong appointment ko (and they’re going to sign my appointment). I had an assigned courtroom already pero bigla akong natulak na kumandidato (but I was pushed to run),” Robredo said.

She was a practicing lawyer before she was pushed to run as congresswoman a year after her husband, former Interior secretary and Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo, died in a plane crash in August 2012 off the shore of Masbate.

Since then, Robredo made a name for herself in the local politics in her hometown and by 2016, she won as vice president under the Liberal Party, defeating former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Robredo remains mum about her political plans next year, hinting numerous times that she might seek the gubernatorial position in her home province of Camarines Sur.

Her party, as well as the newly convened opposition group 1Sambayan, are urging her to seek the presidency, but Robredo said she has yet to decide because she’s focused on her office’s COVID-19 pandemic response.

She knows, however, that she has to make a decision soon since many who want to run against the administration’s bet wanted to be 1Sambayan’s standard-bearer. Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV put his name forward, but promised to back out if Robredo will run as president.
