P45.6-M worth of upcoming infra projects to benefit Sultan Kudarat farmers

Agricultural roads, potable water systems, and an irrigation canal will soon be built for the municipality of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat in a bid to boost the province's farm productivity.

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) revealed Thursday, May 20, that the various infrastructure projects will be implemented under a P45.6-million budget.

Agrarian Reform Secretary Brother John Castriciones said these projects are expected to boost the income, livelihood, and farm productivity of Tacurong's agrarian reform community.

“We provide these support to our agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) to improve their agricultural yields and quality of lives, because the farmers are our frontliner in securing the country’s food supply,” Castriciones noted.

DAR-Soccsksargen Regional Director Marion Abella said a total of seven infrastructure projects will be implemented through the Italian Agrarian Reform Community Development Support Program (IARCDSP). These will benefit the farmers and residents of Barangays Baras and Upper Katungal of Tacurong City, and neighboring villages.

Abella, who is also the IARCDSP national coordinator, said three of the seven projects are intended for Baras. These include the rehabilitation of the 344-meter farm-to-market road with 245-meter slope protection; concreting of a 1,578-meter irrigation canal; and the construction of six units of potable water system.

The projects for Upper Katungal include the rehabilitation of a 419-meter farm-to-market road with 245-meter slope protection in Purok Silangan; rehabilitation of a 567-meter farm-to-market road with 504-meter slope protection, and 203-meter guard rail on the road going to Tacurong National High Schools Annex; rehabilitation of a 604-meter farm-to-market road with 244-meter concrete pavement in Purok Mauswagon; and construction of six units of potable water system.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the projects was held last Tuesday, May 18.

The IARCDSP is a foreign-assisted project funded by the Italian government. It is being implemented in selected agrarian reform communities in the provinces of Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur--all in Mindanao.
