The preparation of Tokyo Olympics-bound boxer Eumir Marcial continues as the national team leaves for Dubai this Friday, May 21, for the 2021 ASBC Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships.
Marcial trained for a month in his hometown in Zamboanga City following his arrival from Los Angels in the US, where he spent six months for his pro debut back in December.
Focus now is the Tokyo Olympics, and the ASBC meet should serve as an acid test for Marcial as other top boxers in the region in his 75kilogram weight category are also expected to see action.
The event is set May 21 to June 1.
“It’s Olympic style boxing so of course it’s good prep for him,” said Ed Picson, the Secretary-General of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP), in a message exchange with Manila Bulletin.
The 25-year-old Marcial clinched a spot in the Tokyo Olympics early last year, before he decided to turn pro when he signed a deal with the MP Promotions of boxing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao.
In his first pro fight in the middleweight division last December 16, Marcial recorded a unanimous decision win against American Andrew Whitfield at the Microsoft Theater in L.A.
Aside from Marcial, also competing in the ASBC are Mark Lester Durens (49kg), Marvin Tabamo (52kg), Junmilardo Ogayre (56kg), Jere Samuel Dela Cruz (60kg) and John Paul Panuayan (60kg) in the men’s division.
In the women’s side, seeing action are Josie Gabuco (48kg) and Maricel Dela Torre (60kg).
With them are ABAP coaches and officials, which include men’s coaches Roel Velasco, Joegin Ladon and Marcus Jarwin Manalo, and women’s coaches Mitchel Martinez and Ludy Therese Ceriales.
“It’s exposure for boxers who have not had competition experience for over a year. Everyone has a fighting chance. Of course, the experience of Gabuco and Marcial will serve them well,” said Picson.
Members of the Philippine boxing team currently training in Thailand were supposed to compete too in the ASBC, but because of quarantine protocols the coaching staff decided not to go to Dubai.
Instead, the boxers will continue to stay in training camp and in Thailand.
Marcial is expected to join the national team in Thailand with fellow Olympics-bound boxers Nesthy Petecio, Irish Magno and Carlo Paalam for a mini-tournament before the Games on July 23 to August 8 in Japan.
