15 areas register heat index values within 'danger' level

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has recorded heat index values within “danger” level in 15 areas across the country on Thursday, May 20.

Dagupan City in Pangasinan topped the list of areas with the highest heat index values with 47 degrees Celsius (℃) registered at around 2 p.m.

Based on the monitoring of the state weather bureau, the following areas recorded the highest heat index values within the danger level on Thursday:

Dagupan City, Pangasinan (47℃, 2 p.m.)

Sangley Point, Cavite (46℃, 2 p.m.)

Clark Airport, Pampanga (44℃, 2 p.m.)

Ambulong, Batangas (43℃, 2 p.m.)

Aparri, Cagayan (43℃, 2 p.m.)

Iba, Zambales (43℃, 2 p.m.)

Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (43℃, 2 p.m.)

Casiguran, Aurora (42℃, 2 p.m.)

Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (42℃, 2 p.m.)

Masbate City, Masbate (42℃, 1 p.m.)

NAIA, Pasay City (42℃, 2 p.m.)

Science Garden, Quezon City (42℃, 1 p.m.)

Sinait, Ilocos Sur (42℃, 2 p.m.)

Cubi Point, Subic Bay (41℃, 11 a.m.)

Davao City, Davao del Sur (41℃, 2 p.m.)

PAGASA defines heat index as a human discomfort index that gives the “apparent” temperature or what a human perceives or feels as the temperature affects the body.

It is at least three to four degrees Celsius higher than the actual air temperature.

A heat index between 41℃ and 54℃ is under what the PAGASA considers as “danger” level.

Meanwhile, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) would affect Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao; while the easterlies or warm humid winds from Pacific would affect the rest of Luzon.

On the 4 p.m. weather update, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may affect Mimaropa, Visayas, and Mindanao due to the ITCZ.

On the other hand, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the easterlies or localized thunderstorms.
