Pinoy cue artists seek history in World Cup of Pool

Jeff de Luna and Roberto Gomez will attempt to give the Philippines a record fourth title in the World Cup of Pool slated May 9 to 14 in Milton Keynes, England.

The two Filipino cue artists begin their quest to finish some unfinished business when they take on women’s pool legends Kelly Fisher and Allison Fisher (no relation) of Great Britain B in their race-to-seven first round match on the 11th.

De Luna and Gomez are hoping to join the list of Filipino players who have won the 9-ball doubles competitions.

Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante won the inaugural event in 2006 before claiming a second crown three years later on home soil.

Dennis Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza made it No. 3 for the Philippines by ruling the 2013 edition.

Gomez makes his first World Cup appearance since 2010 when he and Orcollo lost to China’s Fu Jian-bo and Li-Hewen, 10-5, in the final held in Manila.

De Luna, the lefty cue artist known for his powerful breaks, will appear in his third straight World Cup, including an 11-3 loss with Carlo Biado to Austria’s Mario He and Albin Ouschan in Leicester, England.

Ouschan and He are aiming to win their third title in the last four editions, beginning with a first round match opposite Slovakia in the World Cup opener on the 9th. Also slated that day are matches pitting Japan and Croatia, Czech Republic against Hungry, Russia battling Switzerland, Greece taking on Serbia and Canada facing South Africa.

Fixtures on the 10th are Netherlands against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland versus Iceland, Albania meeting Denmark, Spain locking horns with Italy, Germany opposite Lithuania and the United States against Australia.

Matches in the 11th pit Poland-Kuwait, Estonia-Belgium and Great Britain A-Belarus.
