Faithful encouraged to visit pilgrim churches

Diocese of Iba, Zambales Bishop Bartolome Santos has called on the faithful to make an effort to visit the pilgrim churches as the Catholic Church marks the Year of St. Joseph and the 500 years of Christianity in the country.

Santos urged the faithful to take advantage of the opportunity to gain a plenary indulgence when they visit the pilgrim churches in the different archdiocese and dioceses around the country.

“Aside from going to confession, it is important to offer heartfelt prayers in these churches not only for your personal intentions but also for others, the Catholic Church, as well as for the intentions of the Holy Father,” Santos said over Radio Veritas.

“We have to take advantage of the opportunity to make a pilgrimage in your own local dioceses and archdioceses because of the privilege to gain a plenary indulgence. Do not miss this chance although it may not be that easy at this time of pandemic. It is also one way to remember the 500 years of Christianity. Pray for the Church, for the intentions of the Pope and pray for the local churches,” Bishop Santos said.

The Church leader said strict safety health measures will be observed in the churches as he reminded the faithful to also take the necessary precautions.

There are more than 500 designated pilgrim churches around the country. In the Diocese of Iba, seven churches are designated as pilgrim churches. These include the St Michael the Archangel Parish in Sta. Cruz, Zambales; San Andres Parish in Masinloc, Zambales; St Augustine Cathedral Parish in Iba, Zambales; Ina Poonbato Chapel in Botolan, Zambales; St James Parish in Subic, Zambales; St Joseph Parish in Olongapo City; and the San Roque Chapel in Subic Bay, Olongapo City.
