Are we looking at the greatest collab in animation history?

What do you get when Totoro meets Sully and Mike Wazowski? A Twitter storm.
Last week, May 13, 2021, Studio Ghibli got its fans and those of Pixar excited for what could be the greatest tease in animation history. The popular Japanese studio posted a photo of one of its most famous and memorable characters alongside two from Pixar’s “Monster’s Inc.” This illustration shows Totoro in that iconic bus stop, but instead of being accompanied under the rain by Satsuki, he is pictured with Sully and Mike.

This tweet could be the sign of better things to come, of a partnership that could very well become the most defining moment of contemporary animation history. Or it could all just be one huge fan service, which would make Studio Ghibli the greatest tease in animation history. Most, of course, hope it’s the former. And with Ghibli being busy over the pandemic—with a new film, a bunch of books, and a stage play—it may very well be cooking up a collaboration with Pixar, one that would make even the great Yubaba envious.
