'Star Wars' characters reimagined by EJ Cabangon in his latest works

Through the years, the "Star Wars" franchise has been a prime source of pop culture references. It has brought to the screen a galactic adventure, shaping our hunger for wonder and space. And as its legion of fans continue to grow, more art in different mediums are being produced to honor the cinematic masterpiece.

Among them are the latest works of EJ Cabangon. Continuing the saga, the artist painted famous characters from "Star Wars" for his exhibit dubbed as "Flux: EJ Cabangon."

With a seemingly light-hearted subject, Cabangon is inclined to thrust such personalities from our childhood to allow us to deliberate on the flux of his works, as it moves, and disappears. This is one of the artist's ways in combating the stress and confusion brought by the pandemic.

"Flux: EJ Cabangon" presented by 1335Mabini, a local gallery, in special collaboration with Artesan Gallery + Studio in Singapore. It is not new for Cabangon to be associated with the international gallery. In fact, Roberta Dans, director and founder of the seventeen year old Artesan Gallery + Studio, has been working with the artist since he held his first overseas exhibition with the gallery in 2007.

"This is an exciting project collaboration by two galleries that features one of the leading hyperrealist Filipino painters to date," says Marisa Gutierrez, owner of 1335Mabini.

Also presented for the first time for public viewing in the Philippines, is Cabangon’s monumental masterwork titled "Clipping The Wings Off Angels," which was presented at Palazzo Mora in Venice Italy, during the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017.
