Muntinlupa aims to vaccinate 385,000 residents by November for herd immunity

Muntinlupa Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said the city government is targeting to finish vaccinating 385,000 eligible residents by November to achieve herd immunity.

During the “Bakuna Benefits” forum on Facebook organized by the Ingat Angat organization on May 18, Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said the 385,000 residents represent 70 percent of the city population, which is the government’s target. Muntinlupa’s population is estimated to be 550,000.

“Herd immunity, also known as 'population immunity,’ is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through vaccination or immunity developed through previous infection,” according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The number of Muntinlupa residents who have registered to get vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has reached 84,750, the mayor said, or about 22 percent of the target.

He said through vaccine registration advocacy, or various campaigns to encourage people to get vaccinated, the number of registrants to the city’s vaccination program increased by 606 percent from 12,000 before Holy Week to 84,750.

The city government is planning to expand the reach of its vaccination program by launching house-to-house vaccination for bedridden residents and drive-thru vaccination.

Based on figures as of May 18, 34,611 individuals in Muntinlupa have received their first dose of the vaccine consisting of 5,171 health workers belonging to the A1 priority group, 5,400 senior citizens (A2), 23,992 persons with comorbidities (A3) and 48 overseas Filipino workers under A4 who were inoculated on Labor Day. The total represents 8.9 percent of the target population.

By vaccine brand, 21,782 were inoculated with Sinovac Life Sciences’ CoronaVac, 6,343 with AstraZeneca, 2,979 with Sputnik V, and 3,507 with Pfizer-BioNTech.

In addition, 11,700 individuals have also received their second dose consisting of 5,123 in A1, 5,400 in A2, 5,667 in A3, three in A4, and 426 hospital workers.
