Do you want to be Ms Universe Andrea Meza? Be a SPARTA scholar
The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) has creatively enticed Filipinos who wish to learn data science and analytics to be part of its Smarter Philippines through Data Analytics, Research and Development, Training and Adoption (SPARTA) program.

The DOST-PCIEERD extended its felicitations to the newly crowned Miss Universe and at the time, campaigned for its project, which seeks to upgrade the skills of an initial 30,000 workers in data science, data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and other related fields by 2022.
“A software engineer conquered the Universe. Congratulations Engr. Andrea Meza,” read the DOST-PCIEERD’s Facebook post.
“Be an engineer or any other profession in Data Science and Analytics! Apply now as a SPARTA scholar!”
The 26-year-old Meza has a software engineering degree. She won the Ms Universe 2021 title on Sunday, May 16, beating 74 other contestants.
Project SPARTA was officially launched on Feb. 24, 2020. It aims to establish the necessary online education, research and development mechanisms and infrastructure to enable the industry of data science and analytics and foster smart governance practices.
"By 2022, Project SPARTA aims to have successfully trained and graduated 30,000 learners and fostered a community of data science and analytics practitioners,” said the DOST-PCIEERD, which is monitoring the program.
The project was made possible by the DOST, the Development Academy of the Philippines, the Analytics Association of the Philippines and Coursebank.
For those who intend to apply for SPARTA scholarship grant, they have to create a user account on www.coursebank.ph and log in with their user account and click through to the SPARTA tab and submit their perusable information and document requirements.
They need to select one of the six available learning pathways --Data Associate (Sources, processes, analyzes data and provides reports to explain insights. Entry-level with no domain expertise.); Data Steward (Manage data stored in an organization. Handle all things relating to data processing, data policies and data guidelines.); Data Analyst (Leverage data analysis and modelling techniques to solve problems and glean insight across functional domains.); Data Engineer (Build and manage data workflows, pipelines, ETL processes and platforms.); Analytics Manager (Oversee analytical operations and communicate insights to executives.); and Data Scientist (Create sophisticated analytical models used to build new datasets and derive new insights from data.)
“Depening on influx of applications, kindly allow for 24-48 hours for document verification and provision of course codes,” the DOST-PCIEERD said.
It said successful applicants will receive course codes via email.
