Navotas gov't increases seating capacity in churches

The local government of Navotas City has increased the seating capacity of its churches after the city was able to maintain for three consecutive weeks its lowest number of new daily COVID-19 infections.

Mayor Toby Tiangco said on Tuesday that the city will allow 20 percent seating capacity for air-conditioned churches and 30 percent for those that are not air-conditioned. Previously, only 10 percent seating capacity for churches was allowed.

Tiangco also assured the safety of his constituents in allowing more people inside churches by saying that they are compliant with health protocols.

"In fairness, sa mga simbahan dito po sa atin, dati po sila nagseself regulate, sila nagpapauwi ng mga nagsisimba kapag sobra na. Very cooperative yung mga simbahan satin, (In fairness to churches, they are the ones regulating themselves. They would ask parishioners to go home if there are a lot of people already. They’re very cooperative),” he said in a TeleRadyo interview.

Tiangco, however, urged his constituents to strictly conform with the health measures that are in place in the city to stop the spread of COVID-19.

As of May 17, Navotas has 162 active COVID-19 cases.
