ITCZ to bring scattered rains over parts of Mindanao; warm easterlies to persist across PH

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is seen to affect some parts of Mindanao while the easterlies will prevail over the rest of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, May 18.

Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will continue to experience humid weather due to the prevalence of warm easterly winds.

ITCZ is a region where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge, while easterlies are warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean.

Based on its extended weather outlook for key areas from May 19 to 22, PAGASA said that maximum air temperatures may reach 35-36 degrees Celsius (℃) in Metro Manila, 39℃ in Tuguegarao City, 26℃-27℃ in Baguio City, 33℃-34℃ in Tagaytay City, 33℃ in Puerto Princesa City, 32℃-33℃ in Metro Cebu, 32℃ in Metro Davao, and 32℃-34℃ in Zamboanga City.

How to stay cool amid the scorching weather

Warm and humid weather conditions may persist until early afternoon, while possible sudden but short-lived rains from localized thunderstorms may occur from late afternoon until evening.

Severe thunderstorms are often associated with bursts of heavy rainfall, lightning, thunder, and gusty winds that usually last up to two hours.

PAGASA advised the public to take necessary precautionary measures in case flooding or landslides occur.
