DOST Region 2 holds 1st Regional Research, Dev't Caravan

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 2 has kicked off its First Regional Research and Development Caravan on May 17 in a bid to promote research and development in the Cagayan Valley.

With a theme: “Inception to Commercialization Support to Researchers in Cagayan Valley amidst the Pandemic”, the caravan aims to share the DOST’s programs and services that can support researchers, inventors, and scientists in the region.

The two-week caravan also aims to get the interest and participation of the people for the R&D community, as well as promote ways on how DOST can provide assistance to researchers, inventors, and scientists in the region, through funding, promotion, among others.

Future researchers were also encouraged to attend the virtual lectures and talks, which can be viewed on the Facebook page of DOST Region 2, as to stir their interest in producing technologies through research and development.

DOST Region 2 Regional Director Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang has pledged the department’s full support in the advancement of research and development through new ideas and suggestions.

Mabborang also presented eight recent commercialized technologies developed by the DOST and state universities and colleges in the region that have helped enterprises and individuals in the country.

These are namely SemEx Semen Processing, Chevon (Goat Meat) Food Processing, and Total Mixed Ration made by Isabela State University; Novelty Pot Made of Eggshell Powder and Tatty-Ragged Towel, Three Peanut Post-Harvest Equipment made by Cagayan State University; and Ivatan Beer produced by Batanes State College.

Among the speakers during the first day of the caravan was Dr. Gil L. Magsino, former director of the National Crop Protection Center, who talked about his journey towards becoming a researcher by profession.

“We first think of research as a requirement, but if you look closely, it’s more than that. Research is a tool that can change our society and the way we live.” Magsino said during the program.

The caravan, which was co-hosted and co-organized by the Cagayan State University – Carig Campus, will run until May 28.
