Ateneo apologizes after drawing flak for 'tone deaf' tweet

The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) apologized after one of its tweets drew flak from netizens.

Several netizens called out the university after its verified Twitter account replied to a tweet from Team AMDG welcoming incoming freshmen for the school year (SY) 2021-2022.

Team AMDG urged the accepted applicants to follow the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools' Twitter account. Ateneo then replied to the tweet and offered additional advice.

"ccepted applicants need to gather their documents for confirmation, watch out for their school's Open House, and assess their options well. We're not for everyone," the now-deleted tweet read.

The tweet earned negative reactions from netizens, calling the university "elitist."

Ateneo apologized shorty on the same Twitter thread.

"We framed and phrased this poorly and regret ending with such a tone deaf sentence," it wrote.

" casual callousness of our reply reflects, quite badly, on how we've let generations of elitism and privilege get to our heads. We hear you and we thank you for calling us out. We can only promise that we are working to do better and be better."

On Monday, May 17, AdMU released the results of its college entrance test for the SY 2021-2022.
