Manila Islamic Cemetery to be finished by end of May - Isko

The construction of the Manila Islamic Cemetery located inside the Manila South Cemetery (MSC) could be finished by the end of the month, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” announced on Thursday, (May 13).

Domagoso confirmed the news after he visited the cemetery. He was accompanied by the City Engineer Armand Andres, Manila Health Department (MHD) chief Dr. Arnold Pangan, and MSC Director Jess Payad.

According to Payad, the Muslim cemetery was built on a 2,400 square-meter lot or about 24 hectares.

Andres assured Domagoso that the cemetery would be finished by the end of the month.

Domagoso wanted the cemetery to serve as an exclusive burial ground for Muslim residents of Manila.

To recall, Domagoso and Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna broke ground at the site in July 2020. The city government has allotted P49.3 million for the development of the cemetery, which includes the construction of a Cultural Hall and creation of plantilla items for personnel hiring by the new Muslim Cemetery Division.

The local chief executive has ordered that all the traditions of every Muslim burial should be taken into consideration. He also said that the burying of the dead for Muslims is a very serious tradition.

"Providing them a burial site is our simple way of giving back to them although this is certainly not enough. Ito ay isang pagkilala sa mga ninuno nating Muslim (It's a tribute to our Muslim ancestors). It’s long overdue. It’s our own little way of giving them recognition as our ancestors and letting them know that they belong," Domagoso said.

The Manila Islamic Cemetery will be the third Muslim burial site as there are only two Muslims cemeteries built in Metro Manila.
